My Ode to Edgar Allan Poe…
Every now and then, I get the opportunity to enjoy writing about the literary aspects of my anagram game. Today, I could not resist selecting this CHG MTCH-UP because I could pay homage to the iconic American poet, writer, editor, literary critic and fan of cosmology and cryptography ~ Edgar Allan Poe. Although my Blogs are behind, I was pleased that this Spinnerette was being published in the month of October when we celebrate the haunting spirit world. Undoubtedly, Poe would have approved.
Born at the turn of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe stands among America’s esteemed authors. He is a master of intrigue best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre. His work is pivotal in the genres of Dark Romanticism and Gothic fiction. He is credited with having invented the modern detective story and later his work contributed to the dawning of the science fiction genre. During his lifetime, Poe was primarily recognized as a fearless literary critic. Known for his caustic reviews on the literary works of some of his peers, he criticized the ones he deemed unsuccessful leaving the writers he admired without analysis. There was a method to his approach; Poe’s drive was meant to elevate the art of literature as a whole. His reasoning was to point out the flaws of writers that did not meet his standards of high quality writing. Throughout the centuries, Edgar Allan Poe’s lyrical works endure; his influences on the arts are numerous. The famous Sherlock Holmes author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, Edgar Allan Poe, who, in his carelessly prodigal fashion, threw out the seeds from which so many of our present forms of literature have sprung…
“The Raven” written by Poe in 1845 is considered by many his most famous poem. As a master of Gothic Literature, Poe’s poem is a metaphor for death and darkness symbolizing overwhelming grief. Poe’s talking Raven conveys the perception of loss to the mournful narrator who becomes conscious of the reality that his precious Lenore will ‘nevermore’ return. A Raven’s symbolism is complex and has many meanings in various cultures throughout history. A talking Raven as in Poe’s poem, represents prophecy and insight. Ravens are psychopomps that connect the material world with the spirit world. Moreover, they are recognized as the custodians of ancient wisdom.
For me, today’s Spinnerette.Anagram ~ RAVEN PT symbolically represents a turning point. In life, a person can travel many paths. In my depiction of RAVEN PT, I wanted to express that scenario. The Raven sits on the top of several road signs acting as a symbol of judgment and wisdom. PT is an abbreviation for the word point, in this case representing a juncture, a direction the viewer may take along his or her journey. Most certainly, Edgar Allan Poe travelled many roads with many twists and turns and in his journey he left the world an extraordinary body of work. Sadly, Poe would never know the impact his works would have on American Literature and the many artist that followed in his path.
Of course, Poe’s iconic poem would be to long to put into today’s Blog. If you haven’t read the poem, I highly recommend that you do so. As a child, my favorite Poe poem was “Annabel Lee.” Like “The Raven,” “Annabel Lee” is another poem about the sorrowful death of a beautiful woman. In my opinion, the two poems are masterful in conveying a lyrical visualization that expresses both the love and the loss of the narrator. However, more memorable for me was his chilling short story thriller, “The Pit and The Pendulum.” This short story left me with terrifying nightmares but also put me on the quest to solve the mysteries within a story. Many years later, my son in his elementary years was also introduced to some of Poe’s stories such as, “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” to name a few. During that period, I was drawn back into my own childhood memories of Poe’s mysterious works of art.
Today, my Spinnerette.Anagram, Raven PT gave me the opportunity to review Poe’s well-organized rhythmic supernatural poem, “The Raven” as well as, rummaging around his Byronic life and once more studying his prolific treasure trove of literature. Indisputably, Edgar Allan Poe passed down a remarkable legacy, and his literary stylized footprint on American Literature will be forever remembered.
