WORN GLET ~ TEN GROWL

Today’s Spinnerette.Anagram gave me the opportunity to write briefly on one of my favorite topics ~ Money.

I learned that Glet is a Yiddish and Hebrew word that means Money. The word first appeared in 1529. The origin of the word is from the Old English word geld. Geld was the crown tax paid under Anglo-Saxon and Norman kings. The first known use of the word geld was in the 14th century by the Dutch and the Germans meaning gold. Later, Gelt also represented the chocolate coins foiled in gold given out during Hanukkah.

Money is the means to buy and sell from one another. According to wikipedia.org, the history of money is the development over time of systems for the exchange, storage, and measurement of wealth. In the early days, people utilized a bartering system before using money. China was listed as the first to make coins around 640 BCE. The Lydians became the first Western culture to make coins. Other countries followed. Today, there is yet another form of exchange occurring known as Bitcoin; which I keep hoping to write about in more detail. But for now, Today’s Spinnerette.Anagram is dedicated to the term Gelt referring to one of my favorite topics $$$$$$.

Some of the many names for Money in use today are: of course Gelt, the almighty dollar, banknote, notes, bankroll, bill, bread, buck, capital, cash, check, chips, dough, green, Greenbacks, Benjamin’s, cabbage, change, coin, bacon, funds, gold, pony, monkey, score, bullseye, grand, deep sea diver, clam, cheddar, pounds, shillings, pence, crown, penge, lettuce, moolah, Loonies and Toonies, cashola and more… I had no idea there were so many names for our precious means of exchange.

Perhaps, that is why the Ten Growl. To growl can be understood as a means of communication such as, a warning. The monetary system is once again moving toward change. I wondered, what new nicknames will the future add to the money glossary?
