FOLDERS
The necessity for mankind to organize, preserve and retrieve documents has existed long before the invention of paper and our modern electronic filling system.
According to Wikipedia.org, before the invention of paper, the earliest Folders were from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Archaeologists discovered rasps made from bronze in Egypt dating back to the years 1200-1000 BC. Arachaeiologists also discovered rasps made of iron used by the Assyrians, dating back to the 7th Century BC.
Paper was invented approx. 2,000 years ago in Lei-Yang, China by Ts’ai Lun who was a Chinese court official. Eventually, the invention of paper brought the need to employ new methods for man to store documents. Paper organization changed as the invention of writing flourished, the need to keep the documents brought about the necessity to physically store them. I learned that a Folder holds one or more files, and a Folder can be empty until it is filled. Thus, Folders provide a method for organizing.
The invention of a vertical filing system and the paper file Folder that was a protective cover for documents was accredited to Edwin G. Siebels in 1898.
At the turn of the 20th century, Folders were used as a method for organizing, storing and retrieving documents. By the 1960’s, the “filing system” began to utilize computers. Eventually, this evolution of organizing, storing and retrieving resulted in the world we know today as the ‘Cloud Storage Service’.
The Cloud - What is it … When did it start ? Cloud computing began in the 1960’s and was believed to be invented by J.C.R. Licklider with his work on ARPANET that connected people and data from anywhere at anytime. In 1983, CompuServe began to offer their users disk space to store files and would allow them to upload their files at anytime. By 1994, AT&T launched PersonalLink Services which was an online platform for personal and business communication web storage. In 2006, Amazon introduced their cloud storage service called Amazon S3.
Today, Cloud Storage Folders exist as a resource in “buckets” with hierarchical namespace enabled which allows operations like folder renames and deletes to be performed in a single atomic operation as defined by azure.github.io. In layman’s terms, one can organize objects within Folders in a file system-like structure. Cloud Storage provides Folder management API’s [Application Programming Interface] that enables operations such as creating, deleting, renaming, and listing Folders, as well as retrieving Folder metadata which contains structured information about a Folder.
The advancement of the Digital Age has changed our file to folder method making the management of information more flexible. In this day and age, the physicality of the paper Folder is fading into the virtual world of digital storage. Files can be stored electronically on a server or in the Cloud. Digital File Folders can be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection. Although access to organize, store and retrieve has been made easier with just a few clicks, other issues emerge with the concerns over data security and the possibility of lost data. The Digital Revolution of on-the-go managing and storing information has become the norm. Data Storage Service Centers offer the consumer speed, flexibility and hopefully security. Ergo, we may suspect that the physical Folders housing our paper files will eventually disappear into the digital world of the Cloud.
In conclusion, the future of Folders is unknown, as long as people require storing information it is certain that the concept of Folders will remain necessary. Our ancestors from ancient times would not have envisioned recording histories using the Cloud to organize, store, and later retrieve their precious documents. Unquestionably, the Folder has made a long journey from clay jars, to bamboo sleeves tied with silk, to parchment rolled into cylindrical containers to vertical filing cabinets to invisible data stored in a cloud. For man, the essential requirement to organize, store and retrieve has made Folders an efficacious tool in any century.
