Artificial Intelligence history formed as philosophers tried to explain the process of human thinking. In the 1940’s, the invention of the programmable digital computer was based on the abstract essence of mathematical reasoning. Later, scientist moved toward developing an electronic brain. Eventually, the origins of Artificial Intelligence [AI] research was launched at a Dartmouth College workshop in 1956. It went through many ups and downs over the decades until 2020. Today, Artificial Intelligence [AI] has been integrated into our everyday lives. Let us face the facts - AI is everywhere!

How has the Army incorporated Artificial Intelligence [AI]? Lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) are weapons that can independently search for and engage targets. As reported by Salon.com on 03.09.24 written by Areeba Shah, The Pentagon’s policies fall short of barring the deployment of autonomous weapons, commonly know as “killer robots” programmed to make their own decisions. An article written by Jonathan Tirone on 04.29.24 for Bloomberg.com entitled AI Killer Robots Arms Race: Industry Faces Its ‘Oppenheimer Moment’. According to Army University Press on 02.02.24 written by Sgt. Maj. Ian M Shaughnessey focused on the ethical concerns of using robots as soldiers. He stated, that the Army is at a crossroads, Lawmakers, government officials and society must decide how robots are employed in the Army. They can and will play a major role in the future of warfare; it is just a matter of when.

Today, we are faced with several ongoing wars. Most notably, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Hamas attack on Gaza which brought the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to a new level of calamity. The advancement of AI drones are now employed in both wars. Clearly, AI technology is already reshaping the battlefield. But the ethical aspect of using LAWS still hovers over mankind if machines are employed to determine the life and death of humanity. The query remains a mystery on whether to place human soldiers in harms way or to allow an autonomous machine to make battlefield decisions.

Thus, the future of an AI ARMY is yet to be determined. For now, there are no plans to replace the decision-making soldiers of our United States Armed Forces with Artificial Intelligence [AI]. For me, I like knowing that a trained US Soldier is still driving that car.

Whether or not we want to embrace Artificial Intelligence [AI] integrating our everyday lives, the reality is that AI is here and it is staying. So, it is time to educate ourselves - remember - Knowledge is Power.
