PINE NUT

Well, some may have thought - what could I possibly write about Pine Nut? Interestingly, it turns out the results were - quite a bit!

The history of the Pine Nut according to foodprint.org is that pine nuts have been sustainably harvested for thousands of years from wild forests without any chemical inputs. They can be harvested year after year without any harm to the tree. Pine nuts are also called pinon, pinoli and pignoli and are the edible seeds excavated from the pine cones of pine trees. There are approximately 20 species of pine trees that produce edible seeds and can take up to approximately 75 years to mature.

Additionally, I researched the product Pine Nut and found that China is the main exporter of Pine Nuts even though the United States has a vast supply of Pine Trees. The reason that we do not export at the level of China is twofold. One is the cost effectiveness. Apparently, it takes a lot of manpower to yield the nuts from the pine cones. The second reason, and the one I was surprised to learn about was the conservation of the American Pine Nut. Climate change and labor costs are the most challenging for the harvesting of the Pine Nut. Reported by civileats.com , for centuries the pine nuts were a major agricultural product of the American Southwest. In fact, in the 1930’s they were listed on the Chicago Commodities Exchange.

Further research led me to the benefits of the Pine Nut. Did you know that the Pine Nut is a very healthy source for Diabetes Management, Heart Health, Brain Health, and Healthy Weight Management. As stated by Moolihaiusa.com, the Pine Nut is rich in antioxidants that help to remove free radicals in the body, it helps to increase the blood flow to the brain and thinking ability and helps to maintain cardiovascular function and eye health. However, the Pine Nut may not be for everyone because for some people it can cause a “bitter or metallic taste” that can last for several weeks. This is known as “pine mouth” syndrome. And of course, the many who are allergic to nuts may not fancy eating a Pine Nut.
