A NEURON SEA
For me, this Spinnerette.Anagram was quite the undertaking. After all, science in general can be complicated but I love the challenges of edifying myself with new explorations to heighten my knowledge into unknown studies. This week’s Spinnerette.Anagram - A NEURON SEA was selected for that very reason - New Knowledge. While deciding on this week’s Spinnerette from my Wall Street Journal top 1000 Stock Listing Game, I discovered an article written by sciencedaily.com that conveyed a fascinating discovery about Neurons and the Sea divulging the early stages of Neurons. The article is titled, Tiny sea creatures reveal the ancient origins of neurons: Our brain cell components were forming in shallow seas around 800 million years ago written on September 19, 2023 by the Center for Genomic Regulation. The article stated that the basic building blocks for our brain cells were forming in the ancestors of placozoans grasing inconspicuously in the shallow seas of Earth around 800 million years ago.
During my research, I learned that Neurons are the key players in the brain. They use electrical and chemical signals to send information between different areas of the brain, as well as between the brain, the spinal cord, and the entire body. In layman’s terms, Neurons are nerve cells that send messages all over our bodies that allow us to do everything from breathing to walking to talking to eating to thinking. I thought, that sounded really important, so I spent sometime researching this significant area of study. Mind you, I could not possibly cover all the articles written about Neurons but I could enlighten myself and those interested in learning more about our cognitive evolution.
Firstly, Neurons (also called neurones or nerve cells) as stated by, qbi.uq.edu.au are the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system, the cells responsible for receiving sensory input from the external world, for sending motor commands to our muscles, and for transforming and relaying the electrical signals at every step in between.
Nearly all Neurons have three components: a cell body, an axon, and dendrites that convey information from the tissues and organs to the central nervous system.
Cell Body is the core of the Neuron and contains the nucleus, cytoplasm and other organelles. It provides energy and maintains the structure.
Axon is the tail structure that extends from the Cell Body and conducts impulses away from it and is responsible for speeding up the electrical message.
Dendrites are the branches that extend from the Cell Body and receive messages from other Neurons.
Three things Neurons do:
The sensory neurons carry information from the sensory receptor cells present throughout the body to the brain.
The motor neurons transmit information from the brain to the muscles.
The interneurons pass on information between different neurons in the body.
The significance of the Nervous System is that it provides electrical signals to our brain and supply our senses with touch, sound, light, smell and taste as well as signals from the brain and the spinal cord. The pivotal developments of Neurons began in the 19th century. The neuroscientist, pathologist and histologist specializing in neuroanatomy and the central nervous system was Santiago Ramon y Cajal and has been accredited as the Father of Neurons. Notably, Santiago Ramon y Cajal and Camillo Golgi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1906 for their work on the nervous system.
Today scientists continue to unearth new discoveries in the field of neuroscience. One significant area is the brain. According to sciencedaily.com, scientists have found that the choroid plexus and cerebrospinal fluid play a key role in maintaining a pool of newly born neurons to repair the adult brain. Furthermore, 2024 is anticipated to usher in some new discoveries in neuroscience to understand and treat neurological disorders such as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease. ALS and Alzheimer’s disease through innovations in Gene therapy, Brain-computer interfaces, Virtual reality therapy, and Nanotechnology for brain repair as stated by foothillsneurology.com.
Most certainly, as I weave my way toward the pursuit to further my cognitive abilities through my word game of conversational visual vignettes on contemporary commentary about our Global Footprint and the Industries that forge our monetary system, my hope is that others will recognize that there is always new discoveries ahead. We are only limited by our denial to advance ourselves. Knowledge is Power!
