RELAX ~ CBD

Everywhere I look today, there seems to be a CBD store even my doctor’s office advertises that they have CBD. It’s important to note that CBD is not Marijuana they are derived from the same plant known as cannabis. CBD is an acronym for cannabidiol whereas, marijuana contains THC [tetrahydrocannabinol] which is known to affect the mind or behavior of the brain function. Marijuana is considered a psychoactive substance, in contrast, CBD is non-psychoactive.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has a rich history that intertwines with the broader history of cannabis. Cannabis has been used for thousands of years for various purposes, including medicinal, recreational, and spiritual practices. Historical records indicate that ancient civilizations, such as the Chinese, Egyptians, and Greeks, employed cannabis for its therapeutic properties.

However, the modern understanding of CBD began in the 20th century. In 1940, CBD was first isolated from cannabis by American chemist Roger Adams. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that its structure and properties were fully understood, largely thanks to Israeli researcher Raphael Mechoulam. In the 1970s, research into cannabinoids expanded, but it faced significant legal and regulatory challenges. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 in the U.S. classified cannabis as a Schedule I drug, which limited research opportunities.

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a resurgence of interest in cannabis, particularly as states began to legalize medical marijuana. Studies began to highlight the potential therapeutic benefits of CBD, separate from the psychoactive effects of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The landmark 2018 Farm Bill in the U.S. legalized hemp-derived CBD, leading to a boom in the market. This legislation differentiated between hemp (with low THC levels) and marijuana (with high THC levels), making CBD products widely available. The FDA approved Epidiolex, a CBD-based drug for treating certain forms of epilepsy, marking a significant milestone in the acceptance of CBD as a medical treatment.

Today, CBD is widely used in various products, from oils and tinctures to edibles and topical creams. Its popularity continues to grow as research explores its potential benefits for conditions like anxiety, chronic pain, and inflammation. Ultimately, the history of CBD reflects a complex interplay of cultural, legal, and scientific developments, leading to its current status as a widely recognized and utilized compound in health and wellness.

As a child from the era of the hippie movement that embraced peace, love and freedom, marijuana was often associated with those ideals, too. Marijuana became a symbol of rebellion against the establishment. Today’s Spinnerette.Anagram, cried out to me to collect a clearer understanding of the variations between CBD and Marijuana. When I recall those early years, I remember calling Marijuana pot, my sister always referred to it as weed. It was illegal to buy, yet many friends I knew were engaged in smoking a joint in social get-togethers. During this phase, the Marijuana Leaf along with the Peace Sign became famous cultural icons, particularly in the context of the counterculture movement. This era was marked by a surge in experimentation with various forms of consciousness, that included the use of marijuana and psychedelics.

Debates about the health effects of marijuana emerged. While some argued for its medicinal benefits, others raised concerns about potential dangers. This period laid the groundwork for ongoing discussions about marijuana's safety and therapeutic uses. Many activists argued that the war on drugs disproportionately affected marginalized communities. The cultivation of marijuana began to increase, with many people growing their own plants in backyards. The establishment of a black market for marijuana led to the emergence of various strains and methods of consumption.

Overall, the 1960s and 1970s were pivotal decades for marijuana/CBD, as it transitioned from a relatively obscure substance associated with certain subcultures to a mainstream symbol of rebellion and freedom. The legacy of this era continues to influence contemporary attitudes toward marijuana/CBD and its legalization.

Although Marijuana and CBD (cannabidiol) are both derived from the cannabis plant, they have distinct differences in their composition, effects, and uses.

  • Marijuana: Refers to the cannabis plant that is cultivated specifically for its psychoactive properties, primarily due to the presence of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

  • CBD: Can be derived from both marijuana and hemp plants. However, it is most often extracted from hemp, which is a variety of cannabis that contains low levels of THC (typically less than 0.3%).

  • Marijuana: Contains high levels of THC, which is the compound responsible for the "high" associated with its use. THC binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and produces psychoactive effects.

  • CBD: Does not cause a high. It is non-psychoactive and works differently in the body, often interacting with different receptors in the endocannabinoid system.

  • Marijuana: Legal status varies by country and region. In some places, it is fully legal for recreational and medicinal use, while in others it remains illegal.

  • CBD: Generally has a more favorable legal status, especially when derived from hemp. In many places, CBD products are legal as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC.

  • Marijuana: Often used recreationally for its psychoactive effects, and medicinally for pain relief, appetite stimulation, and other therapeutic benefits.

  • CBD: Commonly used for its potential therapeutic benefits without the psychoactive effects, such as anxiety relief, anti-inflammatory properties, and seizure reduction.

In summary, it was interesting for me to learn the differences and the similarities of both marijuana and CBD. They differ primarily in their chemical composition, psychoactive effects and legal status. Their similarity is that they both come from the cannabis plant. Many have debated the medicinal qualities of marijuana; for a number of states the jury is still out. Most certainly, anyone that has smoked a joint or ate a CBD gummy would agree that the word RELAX has become synonymous with the legendary leaf!
