As stated from my 1970 dictionary, The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: the primary definition of Vanity as a noun is the quality or condition of being vain; excessive pride in one’s appearance or accomplishments; conceit.

Understandably, today’s Spinnerette gave me an opportunity to glimpse into the monetary world of some of the Beauty Businesses we rely on to keep us buying the wishful “Fountain of Youth.”

Some of the top companies trading on the DOW in the Beauty Industry are:

• Coty, Inc. is a multinational beauty company trading on the NYSE founded by Francois Coty in 1904 and distributes fragrances, cosmetics, skin care, nail care and hair care products. Headquartered in Amsterdam the company owns approx. 40 Brands including Clairol, Max Factor and Cover Girl.

  Revenue is over US$9 BILLION employing over 20,000.

• Estee Lauder is a multinational cosmetics company that manufactures make-up, skincare, perfume and hair care products. In 1946, the company was co-founded by Josephine Ester Mentzer later known as Estee Lauder and her husband Joseph Lauter (later changed to Lauder). The company started in New York City and remains headquartered in Manhattan, NY. Over the years, the company expanded their beauty products with numerous acquisitions including La Mer, Clinique and Bobbi Brown that transformed the family owned business. In 1995, Estee Lauder entered the NYSE at a $26.00 offering; today the company trades @ $148.58 under the Ticker Symbol - EL. Estee Lauder operates as a family controlled organization.

  Revenue is listed close to US$18 BILLION and they employ approx. 63,000.

• Ulta is Ulta Beauty, Inc. that trades on the NASDAQ. It’s roots began in Chicago with 5 stores as Ulta3 in 1990. The company is an American Chain of Beauty Stores founded by Dick George and Terry Hanson and is headquartered in Bolingbrook, IL. Ulta became publicly traded on the NASDAQ in 2007.

  Revenue is reported @ US$11 BILLION employing approx. 56,000.

Additionally, I wanted to briefly mention the giant French personal care company L’Oreal headquartered in Clichy, France. I had the pleasure of working for the company during the 90’s as a sales representative; I adored this company! It is the world’s largest cosmetics company with concentrations in the fields of hair color, hair care, make-up, skin care, sun protection and perfume. The company is on the (OTC MARKETS: LRLCY) and trades on Euronext Paris under the ticker symbol - OR. L’Oreal was founded by French chemist Eugene Schueller in 1909. Over the years, the company has grown to own 36 brands including Lancome, Maybelline and Garnier and hold 497 patents. Currently, the granddaughter of Eugene Schueller, Francoise Bettencourt Meyers owns more than a third of L’Oreal and holds the title of Vice Chairman. She is considered the wealthest woman in the world with an estimated net worth of US$100 BILLION.

Revenue is approx. US$44.5 BILLION and employ 88,000 associates.

AYI is Acuity Brands Inc. one of the worlds leading providers of Commercial and Industrial lighting and building management solutions. The company was founded in 1892 and actually started as a Linen Supply company by Isadore Weinstein in 1919. In 1928, the company went public as National Linen Service Corporations known as NSI. The company was listed on the NYSE in 1944. After WWII Weinstein’s son took the helm of the company and began acquiring a number of smaller companies including Zep Manufacturing Company a chemical and janitorial supply manufacturer from Atlanta, GA. In 1969, they acquired Lithonia Lighting, Inc.

Revenue is US$3.9 BILLION and employ approx. 11,500.

NVT is nVent Electric PLC a global leader in electrical connection and protection solutions. The company claims their roots trace back to 1894 with the company - Incandescent Lighting and Stove Company (ILSCO) which was a manufacturer of gas lighting systems. In 2018, NVT separated from Pentair PLC and began trading on the NYSE.

Revenue is approx. US$3.3 BILLION and employs around 11,000 associates worldwide.
